Shoulder Calcification: Learn how Physiotherapy Can help?

What Is Shoulder Calcification?

Shoulder calcification

Shoulder calcification, or calcific tendinopathy, happens when calcium deposits build up in the tendons of your rotator cuff. Also, it most commonly affects the supraspinatus tendon, one of the key muscles that help lift your arm. As a result, these deposits can irritate the surrounding tissues, causing pain, inflammation, and stiffness.

What Causes It?

This condition typically appears between the ages of 30 and 60. Although the exact cause isn’t always unknown, it’s often linked to repetitive shoulder movements, poor posture, or natural wear and tear in the tendon over time. Also, in some cases, it may develop without any clear reason.

Common Symptoms

  • A sudden or gradually worsening shoulder pain
  • Pain at night, especially when lying on the affected side
  • Trouble raising your arm or reaching overhead
  • Discomfort during daily tasks like brushing hair or dressing
  • Shoulder stiffness or weakness

How It’s Diagnosed

X-ray or ultrasound results can confirm the presence of calcium deposits. However, diagnosis is based on both clinical findings and imaging results. Your physiotherapist will begin with a detailed assessment of your movement, strength, and symptoms.

How Physiotherapy Can Help?

Physiotherapy offers a safe and effective way to reduce pain and restore shoulder function. While calcium deposits may break down and reabsorb on their own, therapy can help you heal faster and reduce the risk of complications like frozen shoulder. Treatment includes,

  • Manual therapy to loosen tight joints and muscles
  • Personalized exercises to improve strength and mobility
  • Shockwave therapy (if appropriate) to stimulate healing
  • Laser or ultrasound therapy to ease inflammation and pain
  • Posture correction and education to prevent it from returning

When Should You Seek Help?

If your shoulder pain has lasted more than a few days or limits your everyday activities, it’s time to act. Early treatment helps you recover faster and avoid long-term problems. You don’t have to wait for things to get worse. At Hope 2 Health Physiotherapy Clinic, we’ll help you move better and feel stronger — with care that’s tailored to you.
